Charleston

Walkway, Rainbow Row, Charleston, South Carolina © Doug Hickok - 13 Best Weekend Getaways for an Unforgettable Time

As this semester begins to wrap up, I can't help but be anxious for summer. As much as I thrive on stress and a fast-paced schedule, I'm really looking forward to things slowing down once this unit is over and I finish up my finals. The day after my last exam, Spencer and I are leaving to celebrate our one year anniversary in Charleston, SC. I've always wanted to visit and we just happen to have a week where we're both free before Spencer starts his second year in June. We've also been extremely careful about saving for this trip and with the constant reminders that this is my "last summer" and that I'd "better enjoy it", we wanted to make sure we planned something extra special. We've gathered a bunch of ideas about things to do and see around the city, but we're still open to suggestions if anyone has visited and has some insider tips! Here are a few things that we're considering:

Schooner Pride, Sailing Tours Charleston, SC
2
This is probably an absolute must-do. If you didn't catch on to our love for boats and time spent on the water from the few wedding pictures I posted here, you most definitely will in future wedding posts. There's just something about being out on the water on a gorgeous day that makes everything feel just right.

Charleston, SC. Cypress gardens. Canoe. Things to do in Charleston. Editorial photography. Travel photos. Southern living. Q Avenue Photo.

I'm obsessed with this one. The location is Cyprus Gardens. We love kayaking and canoeing and although I don't see my family's kayaks fitting on top of our tiny car, this would give us the perfect opportunity to poke around and do some exploring on our own. Plus its a cheaper option than some of the other activities.

The South Caroline Aquarium sounds like a fun trip but the tickets look to be pretty high so this one still a maybe. We'll be checking out the reviews to see if its worth the extra cash.

Charleston, South Carolina

And of course, no trip to Charleston would be complete without visiting the Battery. The old Southern charm is iconic for the city and that running road is pretty spectacular (why do we not have these where I live?).

Magnolia Plantation & Its Gardens - Plantations & Gardens
6
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens looks absolutely gorgeous, like it came straight out of a dream. I'm not sure of the cost to visit though yet, but we could definitely wander around here for days.

Although I've heard this is currently a nice area to visit, I also know that this is where slaves were traded in the not too distant past. Its a dark activity to remember, but I think its a good thing to reflect on.

Just minutes away, the charming village of Sullivan's Island had beautiful beaches with pristine sand. Explore this mostly residential island on foot.

Of course some beach time is a must. Sullivan's beach sounds perfect and is pretty close to historic Charleston as well.

It'll also be nice just to explore the city itself and see what we find along the way. I'll be adding some trip planning updates leading up to our departure and of course some pics from the trip itself (which hopefully will be debuting an upgrade in terms of photo quality...hint, hint).

Enjoy this beautiful weekend and Happy Easter!!
