Beach Time

I can't help but remember childhood trips to South Carolina and Florida anytime I'm at the beach. Both my mom and my grandma love the ocean. My mom kept big picture books full of marine animals and seascapes on the bottom shelves of our bookcase. They were always within arm's reach and they got lots of use as my sister and I flipped through each page, occasionally asking my mom questions about a particular animal. And I can still remember how excited my grandma would get each time she spotted a dolphin. No matter how many times she'd seen one, her reaction was always the same - pure, childish excitement. It was an infectious joy that I still believe helped teach me to appreciate the simple things in life. It's no wonder that the ocean makes me feel nostalgic.
The fourth day of our trip to Charleston, the weather was perfect for a nice long walk. At first it was overcast - gray but bright, and then the skies cleared to a more vibrant blue. It was one of the few times Spencer had been to the ocean and it was so much fun showing him all the little bits of beauty you can find. From the tiny crabs to the holes in the sand left by clams, it was filled with all the wonderful things that I remember.
